Guillaume de Machaut, Messe de Nostre Dame
Patricia Van Ness, Birds of the Psalms
We open this concert of contrasts with an exquisite masterpiece of the Middle Ages: Guillaume de Machaut’s Messe de Nostre Dame. For the first time in music history, Machaut unified the elements of the Mass into an artistic whole, forming a template for all of the great masses that followed, from Palestrina to Bach to Mozart, Verdi and Britten. Sharing the evening is a group of incandescent Psalm settings by Patricia Van Ness, written for Cappella Clausura and Amelia LeClair.
In creating these spare, melismatic pieces, Van Ness writes that she was “inspired by the old church modes – and inspired as well by Cappella Clausura’s virtuosic ability.”
